Coming from a family of musicians, I'm thankful that I learned to play some instruments as well, so I was inspired to do this tribute video by a fascinating true story I learned about yesterday from a friend . . . plus of course, I've always loved watching the people WATCHING street musicians, to see their varying reactions as they hurry about their lives. Here's the true story . . . . . "A man sat at a metro station in Washington, DC, and started to play the violin; it was a cold December morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that a thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried on to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. (Isn't it fascinating, and sad, that its usually only KIDS who know to "live in the moment"?) His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on. In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people out of the thousand stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, except for ONE person out of the thousand, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats averaged $100. This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: In a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context? Do we stop to appreciate it? (I always do :) :) ) http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/bell.asp and for more detailed info and some fascinating video clips of this event, check out: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/04/AR2007040401721.html It turns out, when you do some internet research, that MANY now famous artists were once street musicians: Simon Garfunkel, James Morrison, Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Dixie Chicks, Eric Clapton, Hank Williams, Janis Joplin, Jewel, Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Louis Armstrong, Norah Jones, Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Toby Keith, and Woody Guthrie to name a few.

I don't know where I stand - Barbra Streisand I Don't Know Where I Stand (Joni Mitchell) Funny day, looking for laughter and finding it there Sunny day, braiding wild flowers and leaves in my hair Picked up a pencil and wrote "I love you" in my finest hand Wanted to send it, but I don't know where I stand Telephone, even the sound of your voice is still new All alone in California and talking to you And feeling too foolish and strange to say the words that I had planned I guess it's too early, 'cause I don't know where I stand Crickets call, courting their ladies in star-dappled green Thickets tall, until the morning comes up like a dream All muted and misty, so drowsy now I'll take what sleep I can I know that I miss you, but I don't know where I stand I know that I miss you, but I don't know where I stand

Joni Mitchell did this one back in the 60s as some of you might remember, but the original version was done in the 50s by an amazing group called Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, who undertook the formidable task of putting lyrics to music in the east coast Bop style of that era (the style of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie), but in addition to that they were delightfully funny as well. Funny to the point of making Dr. Demento look like Ralph Nader. It's tragic that they're not as well known as they really ought to be, so go get turned on to them. The laughs make the research well worth it.
