Hold on baby, here I come. *A collapse of the Detroit Three automakers would put nearly 600,000 Canadians out of work within five years, most of them in Ontario, as the impact ripples through the entire economy. The study, commissioned by the Ontario Manufacturing Council, a government advisory panel of industry and labour representatives, warned that a collapse of General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler Corp would spread across the country, hitting creditors, suppliers, parts manufacturers and dealerships. Effects on employment would be felt right away, the report states, with Canada losing 323,000 jobs if production ceased immediately, and 281,800 in Ontario alone, the report forecasts. Bush said that if the United States provided aid, Canada would provide its own aid of 20 percent, which could amount to several billion dollars from Ottawa. Canada's potential $2.8 billion rescue package for the U.S.-based automakers is just the first of what could be several payments, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says. McGuinty said that the C$3.4 billion promised jointly by Ottawa and Ontario to the Detroit Three is simply a lifeline to sustain the industry. Will following the steps of history bring change? *The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced that President-elect Barack Obama will use the bible that Abraham Lincoln used for his swearing in. The Bible is currently part of the collections of the Library of Congress. Though there is no constitutional requirement for the use of a Bible during the swearing-in, Presidents have traditionally used Bibles for the ceremony, choosing a volume with personal or historical significance. President-elect Obama will be the first President sworn in using the Lincoln Bible since its initial use in 1861. "President-elect Obama is deeply honored that the Library of Congress has made the Lincoln Bible available for use during his swearing-in," Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Emmett Beliveau said in a statement. The Bible was originally purchased by William Thomas Carroll, Clerk of the Supreme Court, for use during Lincoln's swearing-in ceremony on March 4, 1861. The Lincoln family Bible, which is also in the Library of Congress's collection, was unavailable for the ceremony because it was packed away with the First Family's belongings, still en route from Springfield, IL, to their new home at the White House. A substitute Bible was quickly provided, and Lincoln repeated the short oath of office given by Chief Justice Roger Taney -- a moment recorded in the back of the book by the clerk of the Supreme Court. The Bible itself is bound in burgundy velvet with a gold-washed white metal rim around the three outside edges of both covers. All its edges are heavily gilded. In the center of the top cover is a shield of gold wash over white metal with the words 'Holy Bible' chased into it. The book is 15 cm long, 10 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep when closed. Is the new prime minister well balanced? *Thailand's Democrat Party hasn't won a popular national election in more than a decade. But on Dec. 15, Abhisit Vejjajiva, the 44-year-old leader of the oldest Thai political party, was chosen in a slender majority by the country's parliament as the nation's fifth Prime Minister in a year. Beleaguered Thai's hope that his leadership will put an end to a turbulent few years during which one PM was deposed in an army coup and a sustained anti-government protest movement ended in the removal of three others, as well as the takeover and closure of Bangkok's two airports for more than a week. Thailand's recent political turmoil, which included national demonstrations and the forced closures of international airports, dates back to the 2006 coup that overthrew former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the former People's Power Party leader. The Cabinet of the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration was appointed by a royal command announced on December 20. Apart from Prime Minister Abhisit, the Cabinet comprises 35 members. His brand of politics hardly hews to the more urban-centered intellectualism of the Democrats. Indeed, Thailand may be returning to the days of weak coalitions that dry up as quickly as rain puddles in the tropical sun. Even the anti-Thaksin Nation newspaper has questioned Abhisit's "ability to lead veteran politicians in a coalition government." Has Bush really understood capitalism? *The United States government, with its unprecedented bail-out plan, has been nationalizing the economy. And Obama, the president-elect, wants to spread the wealth around—to make us all more equal regardless of ability, effort, and commitment. The mistake wasn't in not recognizing the "severity of the problems" -- the mistake was the ideology that led to the problems. Communism didn't fail because Soviet leaders didn't execute it well enough. Same with free market fundamentalism. Bush insists that the nations at this summit must recommit to the fundamentals of long-term economic growth -- free markets, free enterprise, and free trade. While mouthing platitudes about free enterprise, Bush has already authorized several socialist-style schemes, including a $700-billion bailout of Wall Street, nationalization of mortgage companies, massive subsidies to American International Group (AIG), and the federal government taking ownership stakes in big banks. It is also newsworthy that Bush has escaped criticism from McCain and Palin for spreading the wealth around. Perhaps this is because McCain voted for this Bush brand of socialism. Of course, so did Obama. Exports and tax income fell during the protest and the government was forced to back down on the tax plan. Fernandez denied opposition claims that her husband runs her presidency. She also said she doesn't regret imposing the grain-export taxes that caused a farming crisis and helped put her approval ratings in the basement. Fernandez spoke at her first news conference in eight months in office, addressing many wide-ranging themes, from her husband and taxes to the U.S. presidential election. Treating a seriously ill patient. *Iceland has after a long wait obtained a desperately needed bailout from the international community to resuscitate its shattered economy but experts warned that the recovery will take time. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a 2.1 billion dollar loan to Iceland to help the country 'restore confidence and stabilize the economy'. This made Iceland the first Western European country to be rescued by the IMF since Britain in 1976. Following the IMF announcement, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark said they would lend Iceland an additional 2.5 billion dollar. Both moves are aimed at stabilizing Iceland's finances and shoring up its currency, which plummeted after a series of bank failures in October. "This is a first step to get Iceland out of its current serious financial and economic situation," the governments of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden announced in a joint statement. "The banking crisis in Iceland is of unprecedented proportions and has serious implications for the country's economy." Iceland's three biggest banks were nationalized in early October after being caught short of funding in the global financial crisis. The IMF recently forecast that the country's gross domestic product (GDP) was expected to contract by 10 percent next year. Qian declined to comment directly on whether China had decided to build a carrier, but in the defense ministrys most forthright statement yet on the issue he made clear that China had every right to do so. The navy of any great powerhas the dream to have one or more aircraft carriers. He said in the interview that having one was the dream of any great military power. He suggested that the United States had nothing to fear should China acquire one for strictly defensive purposes. The general insisted that China would not deploy a carrier with aggressive intent. Navies of great powers with more than 10 aircraft carrier battle groups with strategic military objectives have a different purpose from countries with only one or two carriers used for offshore defense, he said. Although he did not mention any country by name, his comments were clearly aimed at the United States, which has 11 aircraft carrier. Since 2000, China has constructed at least 60 warships. So much for a ceasefire agreement huh. *Presidents Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia and Lech Kaczynski of Poland said they were met with machine-gun fire when they visited a Russian checkpoint near the South Ossetian boundary. No one was harmed in the encounter, but Mr. Saakashvili said it should convince Europe that Russia was in the most extreme violation of a French-brokered cease-fire. The South Ossetian and Russian authorities denied any shooting had taken place, and said the two presidents intentionally provoked their forces. Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, a former defense minister, earlier said that "In a threatening situation, the president is immediately put inside the car, and the car drives off, as the president is protected by a bodyguard. But here we saw both presidents standing and talking, and it seems one of them [Saakashvili] was laughing. This raises many questions." He also said it must have been a "blind sniper" who fired shots from 30 meters away, but missed altogether, and called the alleged incident "not serious." Grigory Karasin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Interfax news agency that Saakashvilis account of shooting was one more instance of wishful thinking on the part of Georgia, and the attack was "a clear provocation" staged by Georgia. "They arrange provocations and then blame Russia," he said. Poland President Kaczynski gave his own account of the incident, saying shots had been fired from what sounded like Kalashnikovs, but that it was not clear who was targeted. He also called on the rest of the European Union to draw "proper conclusions" from the attack. The EU and NATO voiced concern over the incident on Monday, but stopped short of accusing Russia.
