Identificación: 14cm. Ligeram. crestado. Cabeza gris con 2 listas negras en la coronilla, estrecha lista postocular y corta lista malar negras; collar rufo en nuca y lados del cue¬llo; resto de partes superiores café estriado de negro en la espalda; garganta blanca bor¬deada debajo por parche negruzco en cada lado del pecho; resto de partes inferiores gris claro. Inm.: mucho más opaco, coronilla es¬triada café y negruzco como la espalda; co¬llar rufo débil o ausente; partes inferiores blanco sucio fínam. estriado de negruzco. Especies similares: Los ads. se reconocen fá¬cilm. por cabeza gris con listas negras y col¬lar rufo. Inm. estriados, a menudo acompa¬ñados por ads., se caracterizan por forma y hábitos. Voz: Muchos dialectos geográficos, pero en todas partes familiar y fácilm. reconocible. típicam. 162 silbidos largos con o sin un trino al final, chii-chioo i'i'i'i'i' (2a. nota más baja), o chiio-chiiii, etc. Comportamiento: Amistoso y bien conocido, se ve en el suelo o en arbustos y setos, en general en tierras altas cultivadas. Reproducción: 3 CR, Mar-Sep, Sierra Neva¬da de Santa Marta; 7 M CR, Abr-Jul, 2 H en postura, May y Jun, Snía. de Perijá (Carriker). En C Occidental en Valle cría todo el año, con máximo med. Ene y med. Jun al principio de los períodos secos (Miller 1961); taza pulida en el suelo; 2-3 huevos azul verdoso pálido, punteados y manchados de café (Skutch 1967). Estatus y Habitat: Común casi en todas par¬tes en áreas agrícolas y terreno abierto con arbustos y árboles dispersos en las monta¬ñas, con frecuencia numeroso en parques y prados en los pueblos y ciudades. Poco co¬mún y muy local en tierras bajas de Orinoco río Negro. No reg. en Snía. del Baudó o en montañas del lím. con Panamá. Distribución: 1000-3700m en los Andes. Snía. de Macuira en Guajira (250m), Sie¬rra Nevada de Santa Marta (850-3400m), Snía. de Perijá (1500-3500m), los Andes y Snía. de la Macarena; 150-300m en E Guainía localm. en parches de sabana has¬ta Vaupés (Sabana del Cubiyú). S México hasta Tierra del Fuego (principalm. en montañas).
