A proper piece for commemorating the coming end of the world on December 21st, 2012. When Robert Ballard (not the oceanographer) wrote this piece in the seventeenth century - Entrée de Luth I* - he had "the blues". For the 50% of people who even lived to adulthood, there was still the Black Plague and Red Death (and scores of other just as deadly diseases) to be feared, and which killed people worldwide by the millions. France was under constant attack or threat - from Germans (nothing new there), Italians, Spaniards, English (nothing new there, either), Austrians, Moors, Turks - besides being wracked with constant internecine wars and blood feuds. Soldiers and pirates of the day were trained and ruthless mercenaries - bent on murder, pillage, enslavement and rape. The Huguenots were burning Catholics and other "non-believers" at the stake; while Catholics were burning "non-believers" and Huguenots at the stake. The common man could be tortured or imprisoned for just accidentally farting in the presence of this Count, that Duke, or the Cardinal's mistress. Life expectancy was about 42 years; and one would die toothless, ravaged by severe infirmities, and infested with parasitic insects and worms. He would die begging, and starvation was commonplace. Yes, Robert Ballard had "the blues" when he composed this.
