Foreign ministers discuss Gaza at emergency UN session Israel halts Gaza attacks for three hours Israel today halted its military operations in Gaza for three hours as part of what it says will be a daily ceasefire to create humanitarian corridors for supplies and fuel to cross into Gaza. Hamas also halted its rocket fire during the daily three-hour period, as pressure mounted on both sides to end the violence that has killed more than 600 Palestinians and nine Israelis since 27 December. According to media reports, residents of Gaza took to the streets to visit relatives and stock up on food supplies before fighting resumed when the three-hour period expired. Also today, Israel and Hamas said that they were still studying a French- and Egyptian-brokered plan for a ceasefire in Gaza, which has received the support of the United Nations and the U.S. The moves came one day after Israel shelled a UN school in the Gaza Strip, killing 42 Palestinians. The UN today rejected Israeli statements that it had fired mortars at the al-Fakhura school when its soldiers came under fire from Hamas militants inside the school. The UN Human Rights Council said today that it would hold a special session on Friday on the situation in the Gaza Strip. The request was made by 29 members of the 47-country body. European Union countries, Canada and South Korea did not join in calling for the meeting. Iran asks Asia, Europe to end Gaza fighting Iran's Foreign Minister Mottaki today asked Japan to assume a greater role in international efforts to end the 12-day-old Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. Iran's President Ahmadinejad has sent 22 envoys to Europe and Asia to push for an immediate halt to the fighting and an end to the blockade of the coastal Palestinian territory. One of the envoys, Saeed Jalili, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Council, is scheduled to hold talks with Turkey's president and prime minister this week. Foreign ministers discuss Gaza at emergency UN session US Secretary of State Rice joined foreign ministers from the United Nations Security Council yesterday in an emergency session on the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza. Palestinian Authority President Abbas appealed for the UN to end the 12-day-old campaign. During yesterdays four hour session, Arab speakers condemned the councils failure to adopt a legally binding resolution on the Gaza conflict. Foreign ministers will resume talks today in New York.
