http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com Jewelry Television, headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, has begun layoffs in response to poor holiday sales and the weakening economy. Spokeswoman Kelly Fletcher did not say how many employees would be laid off but that all departments were likely to be affected. She went on to say that downsizing may continue until sales improve. About eight months ago, Jewelry Television announced a restructuring that resulted in the elimination of more than 200 jobs in Knoxville and Nashville. Since that time, the company has experienced declining sales and has made employee reductions to try and improve efficiency.

Opeartion Minemeat, The Allied deception plan prior to the Sicily invasion, worked perfectly. The Germans second guessed themselves and began shifting units away from Sicily. The German 1st Panzer Division was moved to Greece and the 16SS Panzer Grenadier Division redeployed to Corsica. Mincemeat was the placing of manufactured information on a dead Major Martin and floating him out to sea. Sicily was invaded by the American 7th and the British 8th Armies on July 9th 1943. The Italian 6th Army defended Sicily with 300,000 men. However, the real offensive/defensive capability was the German 14th Panzer Korps. The Herman Goring Panzer Division, the 1st Fallschirmjager Division and the 15 and 29th Panzer Grenadier Divisions, conducted an excellent phased withdraw, saving thousands of troops. Cooperation between the 7th and 8th Armies was abysmal. The advance in Sicily degenerated into a race. The opportunity to trap thousands of elite German units and valuable equipment was lost. Lt. Gen. Pattons behavior, comments and insubordination to Gen. Alexander, cost him his 7th Army command, and quite possibly command of the 12th Army Group in 1944 France. The Allied invasion of Salerno, Operation Avalanche, on September 9th 1943, came close to a disaster. Naval gunfire was able to blunt German counter-attacks. Luftwaffe attacks claimed several ships. The crisis was averted and both the 5th and 8th Armies advanced. With elite German formations, defensive terrain and the Brilliance of Field Marshall Albert Kesselring, the Allies advance grind to a halt before the Gustav Line. The Anzio operation accomplished nothing, but serve into German propaganda. The taking of Monte Cassino by British, Polish, French, Indian and New Zealand troops could have assisted in surrounding thousands of German units. However, Lt. Gen. Clark was more interested in capturing Rome before Italy turned into the forgotten front. Enjoy this excellent episode of Battlefield

Company President George Hanford says the temporary layoffs are from declining customer orders and high inventory levels during the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2008. Introduction to the world premiere of "Groove" at OBHS

On Thursday, December 18 the Oyster Bay High School Wind Ensemble performed the World Premiere of Dr. Shelly Hansons Groove for band. "Groove" takes one short rhythm and puts in a Celtic style, Klezmer style, and finally a Salsa style. The piece was completed the morning of September 11, 2001. As Dr. Hanson finished the piece, a friend called and told her to turn on the TV. She saw the second tower fall, and thought, "How can I write happy music when something like this has happened?" She put the piece away for a week and then returned to it, and wrote the following preface: One of the most admirable human characteristics is the desire to help others. Many people volunteered to help at the site of the disasters, but those of us who are geographically far removed (Dr. Hanson lives in Minnesota) cannot do anything directly to help. We can, however, strive to fulfill the American dream that people from different backgrounds will all live and work together peacefully. "Groove" is a celebration of the people of New York, who have come together with courage and valor at a time of crisis. This piece was originally commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra, and after 9/11, Shelley has been waiting for the right group from New York to perform the piece. While originally composing the piece for an orchestra, Dr. Hanson realized it might be better as a piece for band and she intended to re-write it for band. The Oyster Bay High School Wind Ensemble played a piece of hers last year at the Tilles Center. Conductor Matthew Sisia sent a recording of the performance to Dr. Hanson. She was very impressed with the performance and asked if the Oyster Bay High School band would be the band to do the world premiere of "Groove", the band version. Interestingly, Shelly said that by combining the different styles of music (Celtic, Klezmer and Salsa), she felt some amusement thinking that this piece represented a brief history of the immigration of several different large ethnic groups to New York City coming together for a common goal. Here in Oyster Bay, the OBHS Media Arts Club Talent Show, the OBHSPAC, the PTSA, and the Music Fund have all come together for a common goal as well. These organizations have pooled their resources and donated the necessary fee to commission the composition of Groove for band.
