"Atomic" was the third single from the 1979 album Eat to the Beat by Blondie. It was written by Debbie Harry and Jimmy Destri and the track was produced by Mike Chapman. Blondie keyboardist Jimmy Destri wrote this song. Debbie Harry claimed in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "He was trying to do something like Heart Of Glass, and then somehow or another we gave it the spaghetti western treatment. Before that it was just lying there like a lox. The lyrics, well, a lot of the time I would write while the band were just playing the song and trying to figure it out. I would just be scatting along with them and I would just start going, 'Ooooooh, your hair is beautiful.'" The song was produced as a mixture of new wave and disco which had proven to be so successful in their #1 hit from earlier in 1979, "Heart of Glass". The guitar riff is directly influenced by the one in the Neil Diamond song "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon". The 1980 single version of "Atomic" was in fact a remix. The original 4:35 version as featured on Eat to the Beat and also on the first greatest hits album The Best of Blondie in 1981 opens with an intro inspired by nursery rhyme "Three Blind Mice" and includes an instrumental break with a bass guitar solo. The 7" version mixed by Mike Chapman omits the "Three Blind Mice" intro and replaces the instrumental break with a repeat of the verse. The song reached number 1 in the UK for two weeks in February 1980 and number 39 in the US. The B-side was "Die Young, Stay Pretty", also from the album Eat to the Beat, which was Blondie's first attempt at reggae, a style they would perform again in "The Tide Is High". The UK 12" single contained a live version of Bowie's "Heroes" featuring Robert Fripp on guitar recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon just a month before. The track was included on 1993's rarities compilation Blonde and Beyond. "Atomic" was remixed and re-released in September 1994, where it reached number one on the Billboard dance charts and reached number 19 in the UK. The 1994 remix was included on compilations The Platinum Collection, Beautiful - The Remix Album and Remixed Remade Remodeled - The Remix Project . The track was remixed again four years later for UK compilation Atomic - The Very Best of Blondie and the '98 Xenomania mix was later included on the first Queer as Folk soundtrack album. The song was also featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and it regarnered the song brief, modern attention. It was covered by Sleeper for the Trainspotting Soundtrack. In 2005, Britain's Fashion Designer Store Debenhams, used the soundtrack of Atomic for the backing of their "Blue Cross Sale" advert. A line from the song is used in Pulp's demo track 'We Can Dance Again'. [info courtesy: wikipedia.org]

#47-Top Rated(Music)-Today #42-Most Discussed(Music)-Today "Maria" is a song by Blondie from their 1999 album No Exit. This song was Blondie's comeback single; it was the first release from the band since "War Child" in July 1982. It was also the first U.K. number 1 for the band since "The Tide Is High" in November 1980, and coincidentally, topped the charts exactly twenty years after their first UK chart-topper, "Heart of Glass" in 1979. The song was written by Jimmy Destri, who had also penned some of their earlier hits, such as "Atomic". When the song reached No. 1 in the UK on February 1999, Debbie Harry, who was then 53, became the oldest female singer to achieve that feat. The single only reached the lower rungs of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart however, stalling at #82.

Artist: Blondie Song: X Offender Album: Blondie [1976] Genre: Punk, New Wave Bio: Blondie is perhaps the most commercially successful band to emerge from the 1970s punk scene. They formed in New York in 1974. The original lineup consisted of Clem Burke (drums), Jimmy Destri (keyboards), Deborah Harry (vocals), Chris Stein (guitar) and Gary Valentine (bass). Blondie released their first album Blondie in 1976. The album was mildly successful and spawned the Australian hit single In The Flesh. Gary Valentine left the band later that year, and they continued briefly as a foursome, recording Plastic Letters which contained the hit Denis. They added Los Angeles-based musicians Nigel Harrison (bass) and Frank Infante (guitar) in 1977. Harrison was a former member of the glam band Silverhead and Infante had played guitar on Plastic Letters to supplement the foursomes sound. In 1978 they released the album that would make them international stars, Parallel Lines. The album spawned several hit singles, including the number one hit Heart Of Glass, Sunday Girl, Hanging On The Telephone and One Way Or Another. They released three more albums (1979s Eat to the Beat, 1980s Autoamerican (containing the number one singles The Tide Is High and Rapture) and 1982s The Hunter) and a number one single Call Me in 1980. In 1980, Harrison contributed several unused Blondie songs to ex-Silverhead singer Michael Des Barres solo album Im Only Human. In 1981, Harry released a solo album Koo Koo, Destri released a solo album Heart on a Wall, Burke recorded with Eurythmics, and Stein started a record label named Animal Records. In 1982, health problems, declining sales and inter-band tension caused the band to split. Harry kept a low profile for a few years while she nursed (now former) boyfriend Stein through a serious illness, but then continued a solo career as an actress/singer. Reformation plans begun in 1996 with a line-up that included Harry, Stein, Destri, Burke, Valentine, and Harrison. Infante was not invited to the reunion. Valentine and Harrison were eventually (and unceremoniously, they claim) replaced by Paul Carbonara (guitar) and Leigh Foxx (bass). The band released No Exit in 1998, which did quite well in both US and UK charts and contained the number one hit single Maria. The album did not include any song contributions from Valentine or Harrison, despite them recording early sessions for the album and Valentine being assured by Stein that they would use his already recorded song Amor Fati. Harrison and Infante later filed an unsuccessful lawsuit claiming breach of contract for not including them in the reunion. The Curse of Blondie was released in 2003 and, while not matching its predecessor in sales, was critically acclaimed and spawned the global dance hit Good Boys. Destri retired from touring in 2004, but is still listed as a band member on their official web site. Kevin Patrick (keyboards), Destris former keyboard tech and assistant, has effectively replaced him. The bands 2006 induction ceremony into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame was the scene of an awkward moment between Infante and Harry, during which he asked that the former members be allowed to play along with fellow inductees Harry, Stein and Burke during the bands set, since it was the original band that was being inducted. Harry replied Cant you see my band is up there? prompting Infante to counter I thought it was Blondie that was being inducted. In 2006, the band toured as the opening act for The New Cars on the Road Rage Tour. Although Harry was more than 60 years old, the band still managed incendiary versions of their old hits, while playing with enough fire to remind the audience of their punk roots. In 2007, the band embarked on a tour of Europe, to coincide with the DVD release of the first ever music video album Eat To The Beat. Harry has since resumed her solo career, releasing 2007s Necessary Evil. Destri is writing songs for other artists. The Blondie band continues to book one-off gigs and is reportedly considering recording another album.
