Liszt Concerto No.2 in A Major I'istesso tempo 78 RPM Emil Sauer pianoforte Concerts du Conservatoire Paris/ Felix Weingartner With alternating pictures of Franz Liszt and Emil Sauer Emil von Sauer (Composer, Arranger) Born: October 8, 1862 - Hamburg, Germany Died: April 27, 1942 - Vienna, Austria The eminent German composer, pianist, score editor, and pedagogue, Emil (George Konrad [Conrad]) von Sauer, studied with Nikolai Rubinstein in Moscow (1879-1881), and Franz Liszt in Weimar (1884-1885). Emil von Sauer was one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation, emphisising the original Franz Liszt approach to pianism as well as a strong Romantic approach to a musical technique that demanded a total command of the keyboard in what was known as the Liszt School of piano. He made numerous European tours; played in the USA in 1898-1899 and 1908. From 1908 to 1915 he lived in Dresden. He appeared in concerts until 1936, and then retired to Vienna. From 1901 to 1907, and again from 1915, Emil von Sauer was a professor at the Meisterschule für Klavierspiel in Vienna. Some of his pupils continued on to successful concert careers including Webster Aitken, Stefan Askenase, Ignace Hilsberg, Maryla Jonas, Lubka Kolessa, Elly Ney, Ozan Marsh, Dario Raucea, and Marie Aimée Varro. Sauer was married two times. Angelica Morales (Sauer), his second wife carried on a legacy in teaching to his name. Sauer had two sons with Morales - Julio and Franz. Emil von Sauer was ennobled for his services to music. He wrote 2 piano concertos, 2 piano sonatas, many studies for piano (including concert études), and Lieder. He edited the complete works of Brahms and pedagogical works of Pischna, Plaidy, Kullak, and others. He published an autobiography, Meine Welt (Stuttgart, 1901).
