January 9, 2009 A protest over the fatal shooting by a BART police officer of an unarmed man mushroomed into several hours of violence Wednesday night as demonstrators smashed storefronts and cars, set several cars ablaze and blocked streets in downtown Oakland. The roving mob expressed fury at police and frustration over societys racial injustice. Yet the demonstrators were often indiscriminate, frequently targeting the businesses and prized possessions of people of color. They smashed a hair salon, a pharmacy and several restaurants. Police in riot gear tried to control the crowd, but some people retreated along 14th Street and bashed cars along the way. The mob smashed the windows at Creative African Braids on 14th Street, and a woman walked out of the shop holding a baby in her arms. This is our business, shouted Leemu Topka, the black owner of the salon she started four years ago. This is our shop. This is what you call a protest? Wednesday nights vandalism victims had nothing to do with the shooting death by a BART police officer of Oscar Grant on New Years Day - but that did little to sway the mob.

January 7, 2009 Further evidence has emerged revealing how the Pentagon is in the business of responding to blog posts critical of the U.S. government. Noah Shachtman, writing for Wired, posts an Air Force flowchart used for counter-blogging purposes. In a twelve-point plan, put together by the emerging technology division of the Air Forces public affairs arm, airmen are given guidance on how to handle trolls, ragers — and even well-informed online writers, too. Its all part of an Air Force push to counter the people out there in the blogosphere who have negative opinions about the U.S. government and the Air Force, Captain David Faggard says, Shachtman writes. In the case of the Infowars and Prison Planet websites, Centcom operatives do not respond to trolls and ragers. In fact, many of them seem to be the most vociferous trolls and ragers. On October 16, 2006, Raw Story reported that the United States Central Command sent an email to bloggers on the subject of the GWOT, or so-called global war on terror, as part of the Pentagons engagement operations. Now [online readers] have the opportunity to read positive stories. At least the public can go there and see the whole story, said Maj. Richard J. McNorton. The public wants to hear these good stories. In fact, the public gets these ostensibly good stories via the corporate media that acts as a propaganda conduit for the government and the Pentagon. Ive always thought that a military-like process would be a good bridge to connect the services with the blogosphere. Theres a field manual for everything in the military, so this flow-chart presents online communications in a DoD [Department of Defense] friendly format, former military spokesman Steven Field told Wired. Mr. Fields assertion is seriously at odds with Pentagon policy, however. A 2003 Pentagon document entitled the Information Operation Roadmap, released to the public after a FOIA request by the National Security Archive at George Washington University in 2006, characterizes the internet as if it were an enemy weapons system. We Must Fight the Net. DoD [Department of Defense] is building an information-centric force, the document states. Networks are increasingly the operational center of gravity, and the Department must be prepared to fight the net DoDs Defense in Depth strategy should operate on the premise that the Department will fight the net as it would a weapons system. Unleashing trolls and ragers who consider blogs and websites opposed to the government as an enemy weapons system is only part of the overall plan to conquer and dominate the internet. Part of the Information Operation Roadmaps plans for the internet are to ensure the graceful degradation of the network rather than its collapse. The Black Widow, performing hundreds of trillions of calculations per second, searches through and reassembles key words and patterns, across many languages. In July, George W. Bush signed into law the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which gives the NSA even more power to look for patterns that suggest terrorism links in Americans telephone and Internet communications. The ACLU immediately filed a lawsuit on free speech and privacy grounds. The new Bush law provides farcical judicial supervision over the NSA and other government trackers and databasers. Although Senator Barack Obama voted for this law, dig this from the ACLU: The government [is now permitted] to conduct intrusive surveillance without ever telling a court who it intends to spy on, what phone lines and e-mail addresses it intends to monitor, where its surveillance targets are located, why its conducting the surveillance or whether it suspects any party to the communication of wrongdoing.
