New Views of the Skies http://www.eyesontheskies.org/book_chapter1.php The invention of the telescope has been by far the most revolutionary development in the history of astronomy. For thousands of years, astronomers only had their own eyes to rely on in unravelling the mysteries of the Universe. The telescope revealed an embarrassment of astronomical riches, and led to a dramatic increase of knowledge about the wider world we live in. Read more about Eyes on the Skies on its website. http://www.eyesontheskies.org/ It has been 400 years since Galileo Galilei first walked out into a field and trained his telescope upon the heavens. To celebrate this extraordinary anniversary, a special series of Hubblecast podcasts is devoted to the telescope — the historical development, the scientific importance, the technological breakthroughs, and also the people behind this ground-breaking invention, their triumphs and their failures. In this first chapter of the Special Edition of Hubblecast, Dr. J takes you on a whirlwind tour of the invention of the telescope as you meet inventors from Hans Lipperhey to Galileo Galilei to Christiaan Huygens. Who invented the telescope? What was it first used for? How did early telescopes evolve? Sit back and enjoy the view! Bigger is Better http://www.eyesontheskies.org/book_chapter2.php By the early 20th century, the United States took the lead in the development of the telescope. Following the Yerkes refractor (the largest of its kind in the world), George Ellery Hale was instrumental in realizing the famous telescopes at Mount Wilson and Palomar Mountain. Astronomers realized the importance of high-altitude sites, and photography and spectroscopy became their new tools. Read more about Eyes on the Skies on its website. http://www.eyesontheskies.org/ In their quest for ever-fainter objects and finer detail, astronomers have always demanded bigger telescopes. Scientific vision, technical nerve and personal perseverance led to the giant observatories of the early 20th century. Located on remote peaks and protected beneath majestic domes, these awe-inspiring instruments have revealed an expanding and evolving Universe, populated by a stunning variety of galaxies and nuclear powered stars that produced the elements in our bodies. A few decades ago the five metre Hale Telescope on Palomar Mountain seemed to be the ultimate telescope. But was it? "Carolyna" is a song by Melanie C, and is the third international single (first domestic Canadian single) from her fourth studio LP, This Time. Written by Chisholm herself, Steve Mac and Paul Gendler — her long-time guitarist since 1997 and the very first Spice Girls shows — it is one of the album's up-tempo tracks. Produced by Steve Mac, "Carolyna" is a song about a girl who has had a rough start in life and needs to escape to find freedom and happiness. The single peaked at number forty-nine in the UK Singles Chart, becoming the first Melanie single not to chart inside the top 40 in UK. It received low promotion in the UK due the fact it was released the same week when the Spice Girls announced their reunion. It was more successful in Germany and in Italy where it was a Top 20 hit. Eventually Carolyna became a radio hit in some parts of Europe. In February 2008 song and it's video was put on the playlist of Much More Music and added to MTV's website in Canada. The song charted at #1 on its first week in Much More Music singles Top 10. According to EMI Music Canada, "Carolyna" is the first single for the Canadian release of the album This Time in April 2008.
