Traveling at close to light speed, our surroundings become distorted and misshapen as space and time bend over backward to maintain the speed of light as a rock-solid constant. In the vacuum of space, the speed of light may not change; but in other media, it slows down and bends – allowing glass lenses to do their work (and the invention of telescopes), and without which what our eyes see would be a featureless blur. In July 2008, on Expedition Labrador, a 4th Element Adventure, Ocean Quest and a group of visitors from the UK, Germany, France, and Canada discovered a lost seaplane wreck in Battle Harbour Labrador. Chartered in 1942 to carry payroll to the remote settlement, it went under the waves when both depth charges exploded. All passengers survived, however the accident took the pilot and co-pilot to their watery graves. Unseen since September 5, 1942, the plane's engine and propeller were discovered, with the fuselage still hiding somewhere near Battle Harbour. www.oceanquestcharters.com

Every year, Ocean Quest recognizes Remembrance Day, November 11th, in a unique way every year. In 1942, four iron ore steamers were sunk off the coast of Newfoundland at Bell Island, ending the lives of 69 young men. Every year, their sacrifice is recognized by the laying of a wreath by scuba divers at one of the 4 Bell Island wrecks. In 2008, Matthew Billard, 15, and Holly Stanley, 18, were the youngest divers ever to honour the memory of their sacrifice by placing a wreath on the SS Saganaga. www.oceanquestcharters.com
