With the goal to create a tool for understanding and healing, ErieKIDS has produced "In the Middle"; our third musical short-film. This chapter in the ErieKIDS Emotional Intelligence series highlights depression as a result of a difficult divorce. Our lead character demonstrates typical depressive symptoms as she endures the impact of the divorce. While sensitive to such a difficult subject, ErieKIDS has not shied away from the realities of the conflict. This broadcast-ready movie is packed with 5 songs that tell the story in a way kids can connect with. "Let's Go", "You Don't Know Me", "I Got This", "Standing Alone" and "Love it Seems" anchor the message of pain that can only be eased by the love of a parent and the care of friends. The movie website; "In the Middle, the Movie" offers information about the movie, cast, composers and links to local, state, and national mental health organizations. The target audience is Pre-K 8th Grade. The DVD also includes an easy-to-use classroom curriculum, information for parents and a referral form that kids can use to alert adults of their concerns.

Promise me you won't leave me." "How did you get that idea, sweetie?" "Because grandma told me that I was an accidental birth just before she died." "No, honey. I promise we'll never leave you." "Okay... I love you, mummy." "I love you too, darling." [End of Flashback] That was when I was young, six months before I was sent to the orphanage. Two months after that conversation took place, I woke up one morning to find myself alone in the house and a note on the table that read: 'Alyssa, I'm sorry, but me and your mum have decided to go to Paris for some work issues. We'll be coming back soon. Sorry that we couldn't bring you-our work limits didn't allow it. But we love you, and are coming back for you. Love, daddy and mummy.' I had waited and waited for two whole weeks, alone in the house with nobody to care for me. During that time, I took care of myself, cooking, cleaning and making sure that I didn't give up hope, that my parents would definitely come back for me. Then, after those two weeks, several policemen came knocking on my door and told me that my parents had already moved to Paris and weren't coming back. I cried, and cried, and prayed that everything was just a dream. But it never was. I got shifted off to an orphanage after all the paperwork blahblah, which I had paid no attention to. I had no relatives, all my grandparents were dead and I didn't have any friends because I was homeschooled by professional tutors since my parents were rich. Even my nanny had left for another job! I had cried to my heart's content and it still wasn't enough. [Back to the present] "Alyssa? Alyssa? Hello, are you there?" I vaguely saw Joe waving his hands in front of my face, then sniggered teasingly at my cheeks. I noticed with a start that more tears were streaming down my face at the flashback. "What, you're still so sympathetic with that little boy in the movie? Oh come on, it's JUST a movie! It's not as if it's real!" He said, trying to calm me down, but it just made me feel even worse. JUST A MOVIE?! IT'S NOT REAL?! Why, oh why, how cruel and real life really is! "You-you'll never be able to understand what it feels like to just watch that movie, Joe. You were born with a family that loves you, you never had to experience life alone, so ever alone with no one else by your side." I spoke through clenched teeth, shaking with emotion. Joe's eyes popped wide open as he realised that he had just triggered something in me. I shook my head. "IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!" It all became too unbearable for me then, and I ran out into the garden, pushing myself until all of a sudden, a pair of hands wrapped around my waist, stopping me. Ok, cliffy, a little bit. I know I didn't post for REALLY long, but I was lazy and having a difficult time with my writing. Now, I promise that you'll get a chapter every Thursday! :DDDDD
