Born in Kōbe to the supervisor of an American-owned tea warehouse, the young Miyagi was early exposed to Western music. By age seven he was completely blind; at eight he began his studies with the Ikuta school koto master Nakajima Kengyō II. Then, with the support of the shakuhachi master Yoshida Seifū (1891－1950), he embarked on a highly successful career as a composer and as a concert and recording artist. His many compositions, which were adventurous for their day, are in a hybrid style (known as shin Nihon ongaku) that shows Western influence. They are mostly for Japanese instruments, but occasionally use Western instruments too, as in the famous piece Haru no umi (1929).
