Printer Friendly Version E-Mail This Article Published on Sunday, September 21, 2003 by the Baltimore Sun Truth About Iraq War Comes in Slivers by G. Jefferson Price III LAST WEEK, a sliver of truth seeped out of the circle of mendacity that surrounds the Bush administration's war in Iraq. "We've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th," said President Bush. Since the war began, most Americans have believed Saddam Hussein had a hand in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Bush and his hawks deliberately have not discouraged that linkage. And they may be pleased that many Americans probably didn't notice the president's acknowledgement, finally, that no evidence exists of that linkage. It was buried in the middle of a general story in The Sun. Even The New York Times gave it little attention inside the newspaper, though its editorial page seized on the significance in an editorial headlined: "The Terrorism Link That Wasn't." The president had timing on his side, of course. He made the statement while much of the East Coast was preoccupied with Hurricane Isabel and the West Coast was focused on the looney California recall election. Bush was correcting a false impression created by his vice president, Richard Cheney (I cannot bring myself to call him Dick). Cheney had strongly hinted on last Sunday's NBC program, Meet The Press, that some evidence might exist connecting Saddam Hussein to 9/11. But even the president would not go so far as to disassociate himself from the linkage between al-Qaida and the Saddam Hussein regime. "There's no question that Saddam Hussein had al-Qaida ties." Truth is, Osama bin Laden hated Saddam Hussein. So you get a sliver of truth, but never too much. There's a war going on in Iraq and Americans have to believe in it because their sons and daughters are being killed there. And Americans have just been asked to cough up $87 billion to keep operations going, mostly in Iraq, some in Afghanistan where the real war against al-Qaida is supposed to be happening. Still, the president is getting a lot of credit these days for being so forthcoming. First for letting Americans know that the next year of the war will cost them $87 billion; now for acknowledging that no evidence exists to connect Hussein to the terrorist attacks. The Bush administration gave Americans two main reasons for going to war in Iraq. One was Hussein's possession of weapons of mass destruction, even nuclear weapons, that posed an imminent threat to the security of the United States. The other was his support of terrorism and the strongly implied link between his support of terrorism and al-Qaida's attacks against the United States on Sept. 11.

Hearing on Cheney indictment turns chaotic The Associated Press Published: November 21, 2008 E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size RAYMONDVILLE, Texas: A county prosecutor who brought indictments against Vice President Dick Cheney, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and others asked on Friday for the judge to remove himself from the case. Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra pounded his fist and shouted at the judge, alleging he was giving special treatment to high-profile defendants. It sent the routine hearing into chaos. Guerra, who is accusing the public officials of culpability in the alleged abuse of prisoners in a federal detention center, asked Presiding Judge Manuel Banales to recuse himself. Guerra has complained about Banales' handling of the case. Attorneys for the vice president and other defendants leapt to their feet in objection as Guerra pounded the table and accused Banales of giving the defendants special treatment in allowing motions to quash the indictments to be heard before the defendants were arraigned. Banales called a recess to contact the chief justice of the state Supreme Court for suggestions on how to proceed. He also ordered Guerra, who had slipped out once before in the hearing, to remain in the courthouse. Today in Americas Clinton set to become secretary of state Medvedev faces hard sell in Latin America Nebraska revises child safe haven law Banales adjourned court later in the afternoon after announcing that he would send all documents pertaining to the motion to the chief justice. He tentatively scheduled the parties to return to court Wednesday morning. Some officials have questioned Guerra's motives. They've accused him of trying to end his tenure with a bang and even scores with political enemies. The vice president is the highest public official Guerra has pursued, but he made a nearly 20-year career of passing over routine crimes in favor of public corruption before being defeated in the March Democratic primary election. It was Guerra's interest in the contracts to build and run a federal detention center that led to some of his biggest successes — three guilty pleas on bribery charges from former county commissioners in 2005. But he also believes it was the motivation for his own legal battles. Guerra continued working for more than a year while under indictment on charges of extorting money from a bail bond company and using his office for personal business. Banales dismissed the indictment in October. At Friday's hearing, Guerra shouted: "Now all of a sudden there is urgency. Eighteen months you kept me indicted, through the election." Half of the indictments returned Monday are linked to privately run federal detention centers in the sparsely populated southern Texas county. The other half target judges and special prosecutors who played a role in an earlier investigation of Guerra. The GEO Group Corp. was indicted on a murder charge for the death of an inmate at a federal prison. "The indictment is the product of prosecutorial vindictiveness and is void on its face," defense attorney Tony Canales, who represents the private prison operator, wrote in a motion. Canales is also the legal representative for Cheney and Gonzales. The defendants did need to appear in person Friday.

Do our politicians ever lie to justify war? It's easy to believe politicians in other countries lie to justify their wars. And it's even easy to believe a U.S. President would do so—as long as he's a member of another party! But if we expect other people to question the claims of their leaders, then we must do the same with ours. We will show that our politicians have lied to justify war, and that these lies endanger the American people. A History of Lies We want to trust our President. And many of us were impressed by Colin Powell's presentation to the UN Security Council. But anyone can convince us of anything, if they don't share all the evidence. You won't hear all the evidence about the Iraq conflict from our politicians, or from most of the "ambulance chasing" media. But you can find it in history books, in investigative journalism, and even in government reports that rarely see the light of day. We have distilled much of this information for you here. Historians now know that many of our past conflicts were based on lies. Sadly, the full list of these lies would fill many pages covering conflicts over several decades, and spanning every part of the globe. Some of these past lies are exposed here, but please realize that we usually don't learn the whole truth about our wars until many years later, when the damage is already done. Could this be happening now? Our answer is yes. But this time we don't have to wait for the future history of Gulf War II to be written to know that its justifications are based on a thin tissue of political lies. We can know this now because history is repeating itself. Many of the leaders who gave us Gulf War I now want to start Gulf War II. So we can judge their credibility now by examining what they did then. The past actions of the Bush Presidents, and their family retainers like Cheney, Powell, and others, expose the lies they are telling today. continued below Make a difference: Help us remodel this site! But the best political lies are usually wrapped in layers of truth, the better to deceive, and so it is in this case. * It's true that Hussein is a brutal dictator, but that isn't why Bush wants to remove him. The whole truth is that our politicians have encouraged Hussein's brutality, thus showing that they have no quarrel with his behavior in principle. Read the evidence for this claim by clicking here. * It's true that Hussein has violated UN
