Ubicada en el volcán del mismo nombre, la Laguna de Chicabal es el principal patrimonio natural de San Martín Sacatepéquez, conocido también como San Martín Chile Verde, uno de los 24 municipios del departamento de Quetzaltenango, en el occidente del país. El Volcán y la Laguna de Chicabal son considerados desde la Cosmovisión Maya, como uno de los sitios sagrados más importantes, donde anualmente 40 días después de la Semana Santa, cientos de personas visitan la laguna participando en ceremonias para la Rogativa por la Lluvia. En este lugar se conjuga la espiritualidad Maya Mam con el entorno natural del paisaje montañoso, la laguna y sus alrededores. En términos biológicos, Chicabal se caracteriza por ser uno de los últimos bosques nubosos de esta región de Guatemala, con flora y fauna propios de los ecosistemas presentes de este lugar. Árboles como el aliso, chichicaste, escobillo y aguacatillo, son hábitat de armadillos, conejos, ardillas, coches de monte, ranas, salamandras, serpientes y aves como gavilanes, lechuzas, chipe rosado, trogones, quetzales, carpinteros, colibríes y guardabarrancos. La Laguna de Chicabal se encuentra a una altura de 2712 msnm, con una superficie de poco más de 19 hectáreas, y una profundidad aproximada de 331 mts.
