Afghanistan's most famous crop is also its most notorious. Opium poppies thrive in sun-baked fields across lawless areas of the country, accounting for more than 90 percent of the world's opium supply. But as VOA's Barry Newhouse reports from Kabul, there is one crop that could be even more profitable than the poppies - if it can reach the right markets.

WONG: This week India is coming to terms with the terrorist attacks that rocked Mumbai last week. With the initial investigations pointing fingers at Pakistani-based militants, relations between the two neighbors is once again on tenter hooks. STORY: India issued a note of protest to Pakistan yesterday demanding decisive action. And today they demanded that Pakistan hand over Dawood Ibrahim a Mumbai underworld don who is thought to be living in Pakistan. Ibrahim is Indias most wanted man. There is suspicion that his contacts in Mumbai provided some support in the latest violence. Ties between the two nuclear powers had already been strained by previous disputes over the Kashmir region and attacks on India's embassy in Kabul. But at a recent meeting at the UN Pakistans president promised to crack down on militants. However the general feeling in India is that Pakistan is only targeting those terrorists that threaten its own interests. [Uday Bhaskar, Indian Security Analyst]: Pakistan claims that it's acting against groups that are engaged in terrorism. But it is only acting against those groups that are attacking the American interests or it is now acting against those groups that are impacting Pakistan's own security. But clearly for the last three years, if not more, Pakistan has not done anything to deal with those groups that are operating against India." Indian investigators say last week's Mumbai attackers were trained by the Lashkar-e-Taiba group in Pakistan. This militant group is blamed for a 2001 attack on India's parliament that nearly set off the fourth war between the two countries. [Uday Bhaskar, Indian Security Analyst]: "We have a civilian government lead by Mr Zardari and Mr Gilani. This is not 2002. We are in dialogue with Islamabad. The Prime Minister of India is in a position to speak to the civilian leadership in Pakistan. Soon after the Mumbai attacks he had actually said that Pakistan would be able to send someone form the ISI (Pakistan intelligence service) to consult with India. So to that extent there is a difference between 2002 and 2008." Pakistan has vowed to work with India in investigating the attacks.
