The whole area of VANNERIKKULAM, one of the well-fortified strongholds of the WANNI Tigers, completely fell to the hands of 58 Division troops by Sunday (19) afternoon. Troops for some time in the past have been waging a fierce and committed battle to bring the area including the VANNERIKKULAM tank of which its bund connects AKKARAYANKULAM and NACHCHIKUDA road. Soldiers of the 58 Division completely cleared a stretch of 10 km of the earth bund from PANDIVEDDIKULAM west to AKKARAYANKULAM west of the terrorists as the troops captured the remaining length of 1 km of the earth bund by Sunday afternoon. Entry into the terrorist-dominated VANNERIKKULAM area was one of the most challenging task for the troops since the VANNERIKKULAM tank provided an open terrace for the terrorists to observe the advancing troops. Simultaneous confrontations in the northeast of VANNERIKKULAM deprived the terrorists of ADAMPANMODDAI area also where the intermittent fighting is still on. The fall of these areas facilitates the access to strategic areas such as POONERYN and KILINOCHCHI and also VALLAIPADU and KIRANCHI in the northwestern areas.
