Defiance Area Composite Squadron luanches a model rocket. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) began December 1st, 1941, six days before the attacks on Pearl Harbor. At the time its main mission was the civilian defense of our homeland. CAP flew hundreds of missions for the protection of our borders, and is credited with sinking two Nazi submarines. After the war, CAP was given three new missions: Emergency Services, Cadet Programs and Aerospace Education. Each of these missions are equally important to CAP and America. The Emergency Services program aids in the search for lost pilots, downed aircraft and missing people. We also photograph disaster zones and were the first non-military airplanes in the sky after 9/11. The Cadet Program provides an opportunity for America's youth to learn about aviation and leadership. Involvement in the Cadet Program has produced numerous pilots and leaders. The first female solo pilot for the Thunderbirds was a former CAP cadet. Aerospace Education is the program through which CAP keeps the hope of aviation alive, and through the Cadet Program many people have gone on orientation flights in CAP aircraft. CAP is a non-profit volunteer organization and an auxiliary of the United States Air Force. CAP provides unique opportunities for its members of all ages. You must be twelve or older to join. No matter what your interests are, CAP has something to offer, whether it's airplanes and radios or leadership and fellowship. Check out gocivilairpatrol.com for more information or join us any Thursday night from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Jewell Community Center (formerly the Jewell Legion Hall).
