Master beekeeper Norm Bantz shows us his honey bee colony (Apis melliflera) in New York City's own "Bronx River Valley" and teaches Dana to do apitherapy. WE also learn and observe the basics of the hive: winter honey requirements for a colony, (35 lbs. no matter how large the colony.) We watch two females attacking a male - tearing his wings off - because this was autumn, when the males are thrown out to reduce honey needs over the winter and keep the colony warmer. Only the female bees work, (see my First Week with the Bees film for drones at play.) And we watch females returning to the colony laden with pollen. In apitherapy, the sting of the European honeybee is used to cure ailments from anxiety to arthritis, multiple sclerosis to cancer. Norm has done apitherapy on thousands of people , with only one full-blown allergic response. To be safe, leave the stinger in for just two minutes and remove. Give it ten minutes to see if they go into anapholactic shock (rare), or respiratory arrest. If so, call an ambulance and administer aspirin or a shot of anti-inflammatory. If they are OK, keep stinging 3 - 7 times, leaving the stinger in until it falls out for maximum effect.
